PLANNED TEMPORARY WATER SHUTDOWN – UPDATES – 12-15 MAY 2022

UPDATE: 16 May 2022 – 17:35

Following reports from residents that some areas in Kimberley are still without water, I visited Newton Reservoir at 17:00 and spoke with the staff. There does not appear to be any mechanical issues, water is being pumped from Riverton and water levels are high enough to allow for the release of water from Newton.

It appears as if the water being pumped from Newton is being used before it can be distributed throughout the town, i.e. areas with access to water currently are absorbing the water before it can reach other areas. This is certainly understandable, considering that the shutdown lasted much longer than anticipated.

A burst pipe in Conrad Street is also affecting supply.

We are given the assurance that water tankers will continue to provide water.

UPDATE: 16 May 2022 – 10:25

The following information was received from the Head of Infrastructure:

“Newton Reservoir is now open, all areas should have water especially high lying areas. We have just started the pumps at Newton.”

Info via Ward 24 Cllr, Chris Whittaker

UPDATE: 16 May 2022 – 07:40

Please be informed that areas receiving water from Newton Reservoirs will get it a little late. The system was too dry, and it has taken more time for water to reach the Reservoirs.
Also, as the system was charged, a defect was observed at one of the 965 sites, which has since been resolved. This affected recharging this pipeline, and caused a delay of about 3 hours.
As soon as water reaches Newton Reservoirs, water will be opened for the town area. Some Areas receiving water directly from the mainline have water already, although pressure might be a little low.

We will continue to distribute water with The roaming water tankers and Jojos throughout the city until water has been restored to all households.

UPDATE: 16 May 2022 – 06:15

I went to Newton Reservoir at approximately 00:30 this morning. Water had not reached the Reservoir as only one pump was fully pressurized at Riverton.

As the municipality said all residents will have water by 06:00 this morning, I visited Newton a few minutes ago.

Water is reaching Newton from Riverton but only air trapped in system is being released from Newton. Once the air is gone, water will be released.

No time given but a Supervisor from Waterworks is monitoring the situation.

I will update again when possible.

Info via Ward 24 Cllr, Chris Whittaker

UPDATE: 15 May 2022 – 21:00

We have completed all sites with no hiccups, Riverton plant has been restarted, and the team is opening valves to fill the system first.

We are currently busy with line filling. Areas getting water from the mainline will get water first, and those getting water from Newton will get water later.

Pls ensure that you keep your taps closed to avoid accidental flooding of homes once water is restored.

UPDATE: 9 May 2022 – 13:43
The Sol Plaatjie Municipality has scheduled a water interruption for the whole of Kimberley from THURSDAY 12th MAY till SUNDAY 15th MAY 2022. This is done to repair the water leaks on the 965mm pipeline near gogga and behind 3SAI military base, the 600mm pipeline near the Roodepan takeoff.

Roaming water tankers will drive through in all wards to make sure all residents are serviced. Residents are urged to have their buckets/containers ready when the water tankers drive through.

Jojos will also be placed nearby all police stations in wards. Jojos will also be made available at the following municipal service centres;
*Newton Reservoir
*Sol Plaatje Civic Centre
*Emergency Services(Fire Station)

WE URGE RESIDENTS TO MAKE ADEQUATE SUPPLY PROVISION TO CARRY THEM THROUGH THE DURATION OF THE INTERRUPTION

UPDATE: 5 May 2022 – 10:00
The bulk water pipe lines from Riverton to Kimberley are once-more experiencing severe leaks. The “965mm” pipeline has excessive leaks mainly in the vicinity of Gogga, which has an impact on the R31 Road to Barkly West. There are also leaks behind 3SAI Military camp and Lerato Park supply take-off. Similarly, there are severe leaks on the “600mm” pipeline, which are believed to be contributing to the Kamfersdam situation. These leaks require urgent attention, as they are also contributing to water losses, and dropping levels at the reservoirs.

Additional to addressing water leaks, to enhance security of water supply to Kimberley and its surrounding areas, the program will include installation of a 450mm bulk water meter, installation of 450mm isolation valve in the Phuthanang area (aka Langbome take-off). This work will assist the water balance determination in the supply zone, alleviating water situation in the Wildebeeskuil pan, near Platfontein, to curb secondary contamination of drinking water in the city. Cleaning of clarifiers, and some urgent maintenance work will also be done in Riverton during this period. This is to improve production efficiency and maintain acceptable water quality produced.

Scope of Works

  • 2 leaks on 965mm behind 3SAI Military Base
  • 3 leaks on 965mm leak near Gogga Pump Station
  • 3 leaks on the 600mm pipe at the Roodepan take off
  • Riverton WPW:
  • Repairs and maintenance on 4 x Clarifiers
  • Replacement of desludging valves
  • Repairs on Jet Pumps
  • Cleaning and draining of excessive mud and sludge

This operation is crucial in addressing the current water situation in Kimberley, and to ensure the security of supply while planning for infrastructure upgrading and replacement is underway. Water Tankers and Jojos will be made available in various areas and will be announced through all our media platforms. We urge all residents to make the necessary arrangements to source water.
