TEMPORARY WATER INTERRUPTION NOVEMBER 2021 – UPDATES

SEE BOTTOM OF PAGE FOR A LIST OF WATER POINTS/WATER TANKER LOCATIONS DURING THE WATER INTERRUPTION

UPDATE: 22 NOVEMBER 2021 – 16:30

The supply from Riverton resumed yesterday as planned and the system started recharging to supply all areas with water. The team was out in Riverton Purification Plant monitoring the supply pressure and observed that the pumping capacity wasn’t optimal. We are happy to report that a valve that was problematic, which actually reduced supply towards Kimberley has been repaired. Newton Reservoir pumps have been started and the entire city reticulation network should start receiving water.

We will however continue with nightly shutdowns to improve the Reservoir levels from 8pm daily till further notice.

We profusely apologize for the inconvenience.

We thank you for your cooperation and patience throughout the Interruption.

UPDATE: 22 NOVEMBER 2021 – 15:08

Hi just a update on the water situation , the pumps are tripping in Riverton and on inspection we found that the valves that supplies water to Kimberley was not opened thus causing the pumps to trip . They are open now and water is being pumped to Newton Reservoir so we expect water by 21h00 this evening.

Please note the above is an unofficial update, as such we don’t know the exact source thereof but was posted on two Ward Cllr groups.

UPDATE: 22 NOVEMBER 2021 – 11:58

The Team from Waterworks is currently busy locating the cause of water pushing back from Mid Siding to Riverton Pump Station causing one of the pumps to keep on tripping. Hopefully this will be solved soon and water supply to Newton Reservoir be restored.

UPDATE: 22 NOVEMBER 2021 – 09:34

I was at the Newton Reservoir a few minutes ago and the situation is as follows:
The valves on the pumps are open to indicate when the water from Riverton has filled up the bulk supply lines and to release air in the system.
I phoned an Official at Riverton who indicated that the pumps were switched on at Riverton yesterday, but did not confirm time of switch on.
It was also indicated that one of the pumps tripped during the night and had to be restarted. Time of re-start is not known.
It was also indicated that it takes between 6 to 8 hours to fill the bulk supply lines to the Newton Reservoir.
The pumps at Newton Reservoir will only be switched on once water has reached the facility.
The supply lines to the various suburbs will only then be filled as well as the storage tower, which may take another hour or two.
At this stage it is impossible to fix a time to availability of water to any area.

UPDATE: 22 NOVEMBER 2021 – 08:00

All work on the bulk and reticulation water supply lines has been completed.

Only the site in Edgerton road near the halfway house has been 90 percent completed, with only the bend outstanding to boost the pressure in the area.

The bend will be installed once all areas have received water, and will not require a water supply interruption to be completed.

The supply from Riverton has resumed and the system is busy recharging until all areas have water. The team is out in Riverton Purification Plant monitoring the supply pressure as we are receiving complaints of non supply of water. No leaks are present of the supply lines and all valves on the lines are being manually inspected to ensure they open. Full water supply restoration is our priority at the moment.

The Sol Plaatje Municipality would like to thank residents for their cooperation and patience throughout the Interruption.

UPDATE: 22 NOVEMBER 2021 – 07:34

Morning everyone.
The pumps at Newton Reservoir are not commissioned as yet and indications are that air is currently being released at the pumps which may indicate that the pumps will hopefully be switched on soon whereafter the system needs to be filled up first before water will be available.
I will keep in touch with Newton Reservoir and give feedback regarding the progress.

Ward 25 Cllr

UPDATE: 21 NOVEMBER 2021 – 14:00

All work on the bulk water supply lines has been completed.

These include sites behind 3SAI Military base, Camelia street and at the site near Gogga pump station.

The supply from Riverton will resume once all scour valves has been closed, however it should be noted that the filling process must be completed before full pumping will resume before water will reach the consumers.

The only outstanding work that remains, is the site in Egerton road near the Halfway House where construction is still currently underway. Once we flood the network and restore supply, this might be the only area that maybe not able to receive supply of water later than all areas. Work will continue until on this site until completion.

Thank you for your cooperation.

UPDATE: 19 NOVEMBER 2021 – 12:00

Pumping of Water from Riverton Purification Plant was suspended yesterday at 18:00 as communicated. This is to allow less water into the 965mm mainline pipe that supplies Kimberley with water. All valves on the line have been closed and sections where repairs will be effected are being scoured to empty. Once the line is empty work will commence. In other areas like corner Edgerton and Main road work is progressing fairly well. Distribution of water throughout the City using water tankers and Jojo Tanks is on schedule. We continue to urge the community to use water only for essential purposes and as advised should keep adequate water until water supply restored. Residents that are bereaved should contact the municipality for assistance on resupply by water tankers. Thank you for your cooperation.

UPDATE: 12 NOVEMBER 2021 – 20:30

SCHEDULED REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE ON THE BULK PIPELINES AND INTERNAL RETICULATION NETWORK WITHIN THE CITY
Due to the recurring problem of water leaks as a result of aging infrastructure, residents of the city of Kimberley are advised of a planned Water Supply Interruption for the entire city from 6pm on Thursday 18 November 2021 to Sunday late afternoon 21 November 2021 to do the necessary repairs.

Scope of the Project include several major known and visible leaks on the 965 line from Riverton to Kimberley. The total planned intervention work sites are at eight (8) which are located as follows:

• Four (4) near the 3SAI military base
• Three (3) near Gogga Pump Station, which also includes the replacement of a leaking scour valve
• One (1) near Camelia Street

We will in future do additional assessments on non-visible leaks that may exist and handle them appropriately

There are no visible leaks on the 600mm line at the moment.

There are also several leaks in the reticulation network within the city. The more serious ones are at about eight (8) sites, which will also be dealt with simultaneously with the 965 line repairs. These are at corner Edgerton & Central Road, William Gasson, Hull Street, N12, Oliver Road and three (3) in the city centre.

WATER AVAILABILITY DURING INTERRUPTION
Water tankers will be placed at specific sites covering all areas of the City while (5) Water tankers will focus on emergencies e.g. hospitals. Water points will be at the Newton Reservoir and the emergency services site at civic offices. Four (4) filler points have been set up at Newton too speed up filling of trucks.

About 200 JoJo tanks that are currently located in informal settlements will be serviced by seven (7) water tankers on an ongoing basis. NB: We urge residents to make adequate supply provisions to carry them through the duration until Sunday night.

Accordingly, we will commence nightly water interruptions from tomorrow Saturday night, 13th November 2021 to boost the water reserves at Newton Reservoir Complex. The Reservoirs will be kept at full capacity and water will only be released into the network once supply from Riverton Purification Plant has been started.
