Kimberley Water Supply UPDATES – February 2024

UPDATE: 22 February 2024 – 19:00

According to the municipality, Newton is currently off due to a lack of supply from Riverton.

The reason given is a trip on one of the pumps.

Once the issue is resolved, supply will be restored.

This will most likely delay the nightly water shutdown.

UPDATE: 21 February 2024 – 14:30

RE: REINTRODUCTION OF DAYTIME AND CONTINUATION OF THE NIGHTLY WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTIONS

The Sol Plaatje Municipality would like to update the residents about the reintroduction of the Daytime Water Supply Interruption during the week as a result of heatwaves and the low levels at Newton Reservoirs.
The following schedule will be implemented:

DATE AFTERNOON INTERRUPTION NIGHTLY INTERRUPTION
Wednesday, 21 February 2024 12h00 to 17h00 20h00 to 05h00
Thursday, 22 February 2024 12h00 to 17h00 20h00 to 05h00
Friday, 23 February 2024 12h00 to 17h00 20h00 to 05h00
Saturday, 24 February 2024 12h00 to 17h00 20h00 to 05h00
Sunday, 25 February 2024 12h00 to 17h00 20h00 to 05h00

The Newton reservoirs have a storage capacity of 261 megalitres which comprises of;102, 91, 45, and 23 megalitres reservoirs that are low to empty. The water levels at Newton Reservoirs are as of 20 February 2024:

TANK NUMBER CAPACITY DESIRED LEVEL CURRENT AVG LEVEL
1 102 Megalitre 17 Feet 7,3 Feet
2 91 Megalitre 17 Feet 7,11 Feet
3 45 Megalitre 16 Feet 7,10 Feet
4 23 Megalitre 16 Feet 8,10 Feet

The leakages in the main supply pipelines further exacerbate the production shortfall and inadequate water supply.

The Municipality appeals to residents and public members to stop watering their gardens and reserve water for consumption and other critical uses only. This will ensure that water pumped into the reservoirs can reach levels that generate enough pressure to supply all areas in Kimberley. The community is encouraged to adopt water-conserving habits during this period.

Residents experiencing water interruptions outside of the above stipulated times are encouraged to lodge queries with our Call Centre on 053 830 6111 or Toll-Free 080 1229 010.

Your patience and understanding are highly appreciated as we forge towards guaranteeing water security.

Yours faithfully
S.B. Matlala
Municipal Manager

UPDATE: 20 February 2024 – 12:00

Based on Resident’s reports as well as mentioned by Ward 21 Councillor, it appears as though Newton Reservoir has been switched off earlier than the stipulated time of the afternoon water shutdown, apparently due to low levels at the reservoir. No official statement has yet been released by Sol Plaatje Municipality.

Due to the afternoon water shutdowns, residents might only get water thereafter depending on Newton Reservoir levels.

UPDATE: 14 February 2024 – 17:30

Cllr Peet Louw, Ward 23, has provided an update regarding the current water situation.

The pumps at Newton are still off and the dam levels are very low.

We do not know the cause.
