Sol Plaatje Municipality media statement on water restrictions – Weekend Shutdown
“The Sol Plaatje Municipality has experienced water restrictions since November 2018 till 2019. The Executive Mayor, Alderman Patrick Mabilo is very concerned with the current trajectory of water restrictions and the recent 24 hour shutdown which was implemented as from noon on Saturday 19 January till noon, Sunday 20 January 2019.
The Executive Mayor has established a tactical task team which comprises of the Mayor’s Office, the Mayoral committee, the Municipal Manager, Executive Director of Infrastructure as well as chief engineers responsible for water and mechanical infrastructure.
The Mayor together with the task team will be visiting the Riverton Treatment Plant and has at present assigned the team with an action programme to develop short term, medium and long term solutions to the water challenges we are facing.
The Executive Mayor is committed to avert any crises that may stem from the current situation. Alderman Mabilo is resolute in bringing stability within the municipality and to provide efficient service delivery.
The Sol Plaatje Municipality therefore has postponed weekend water restrictions till further notice, and will not implement the water shutdown on 26 and 27 January 2019 as previously stated.

“This does not mean that we are out of the woods with regard to the levels at the Newton Reservoir,” Selo Matsie said. “We are just managing the situation and residents should not take this suspension as an indication that there is an abundance of water.”
