Wanya Tsotsi – Residents Fight Crime

Escalating crime in Kimberley is mobilising residents to combat criminals and gangsters.

This weekend Galeshewe residents came out in droves to form & support the Wanya Tsotsi anti crime group.  On Saturday & Sunday streets were patrolled, suspects were gathered, de-armed and handed over the police.

The youngsters were questioned by the police who released the suspects stating that they could not be linked to any reported crimes.

Operation Wanya Tsotsi - Kimberley GalesheweSaturday morning a young man was stabbed and robbed of his cell phone in the street behind the North Cape Mall.   He was released from hospital after being stitched up.  Employees from the mall believe the same gang of young people active in Galeshewe to be responsible.  The big, well dressed, teenage group are called the CM’s (Criminal Mapensele’s) by locals.
Nombulelo  Oliphant “The CM’s (Criminal Mapensele’s) are a big teenage group that consists of girls and boys. They live in and around Kimberley but mostly in Galeshewe, they are well dressed and appear to be well mannered, but are  dangerous.” a resident stated on the Saam Staan Kimberley Facebook group.  On the same group a mall employee described how a lady was robbed in front of her and how she barely escaped the gang.
Sue-Ellen Stuurman “That’s their new hot spot at the mall.  They stand streets away waiting for their next victim. I ran like hell around 8 going to the taxi.   They got the lady that ran before us.  The stole her handbag with everything.  They are evil man.  I think if they get one or two cm’s they must burn their fingers as a warning to the others.  Where I live they have started knocking on doors late and when you open they rush in.

Operation Wanya TsotsiThe gangs were warned on Facebook by local entrepreneur,  Tumelo Mosikare,  “Last night’s community uprising and street cleaning is just an example of what we are capable of achieving when we stand together. The knives taken from these young boys equals the lives saved just for last night. When the streets are completely rid of the scum in them.. then we have to give our young brothers and Sisters an alternative. Idle hands & minds are playgrounds of the devil. Those who made it to today’s early morning raid… let’s unroot this evil once and for all. You drug lord. You Tuckshop owners selling our kids drugs. We see you and YOU ARE NEXT!”

From the Kimberley Facebook group. Mmemokamedi Sekgoro “I salute you community.  I was at Itumeleng , I saw the community patrolling with their private cars at Moraladi, Seleke, through Stamper, raiding these gangs.  That is a good job from our community.  Keep up the good job”

Police spokesman, Lieutenant Donald Mdhluli, asked the community to work in partnership with the police. “We appreciate the fact that the community is playing a role in eradicating crime.  However, we urge the community not to take the law into their own hands.  We further plead with members of the community to make use of structures such as the Community Police Forum (CPF) as the police engage their respective Sector Coordinators whenever they suspect that certain people are involved in crime.”
