According to Sol Plaatje Communication Spokesperson, Sello Matsie, the fine for using a Cellphone whilst driving is R1500,00 and driving without a driver’s licence is R750,00.
There are also no by-laws that authorise the confiscation of a user’s mobile device and/or to detain one if he/she is caught driving without their driving licence.
This is in response to a message circulating on social media:

Statement from Sello Matsie
Dear Motorists- Kimberley jurisdiction
Please be advised that the Sol Plaatje Municipality distances itself from the sms doing rounds on the confiscation of mobile phones by our Law Enforcement Agencies. Our by- laws dont authorise the confiscation of mobile phones and the amounts mentioned are incorrect. The fine for the use of mobile phones while driving is R1500.00 while driving without your driving licence is R750.00 and you wont be held in any custody.
Please assist in preventing unnecessary public panic by not forwading fake news. Thanks for your cooperation.
Regards
Sello Matsie
Spokesperson
Sol Plaatje Municipality
