Upgrading of intersections on R31 Main Road between Barkly West and Landbou Roads
The South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) would like to inform the public of the commencement to the upgrading of the three major intersections on R31 Main Road between Barkly West and Landbou roads to roundabouts at each of the intersections. The upgrade will also include a new access road midway between the R31/R357 and N8/R31 intersections.
The phasing of the construction work is in the following order as per the construction programme:
- The proposed R31/R357 roundabout will start on 22 September 2017;
- The proposed N8/R31 roundabout will start on 22 September 2017;
- The proposed N12/R31 roundabout will start on 04 April 2018; and
- The access road on R31 will start mid-October 2017 to the end of construction period in January 2018.
“The main objective of these projects is to improve not just the experience of the road user but their safety as well. Studies have shown that the intersections, in their current form, experience regular traffic incidents caused by vehicles travelling at high speeds, with serious injuries, and in some instances fatalities, to drivers and passengers”.
“The contract also makes provision for the increased safety of pedestrians and cyclists with surfaced sidewalks and pedestrian crossings and the creation of kerbed surfaced median islands within each roundabout approach. The installation of street lighting at each of the three roundabouts and their approaching roads is a significant safety benefit to drivers, pedestrians and cyclists during night-time conditions,” Says Kobus van der Walt, SANRAL Western Region’s Manager.
The delay due to construction under traffic at each intersection is expected to be ten to fifteen minutes, depending on traffic volumes. No alternative routes exist within the immediate area surrounding the project which could be used as a bypass to avoid construction.

Opgradering van kruisings op R31 Hoofweg tussen Barkly-Wes en Landbou Paaie
Noord-Kaap, 09 Oktober 2017: Die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Padagentskap SOC Bpk. (SANRAL) wil graag die publiek inlig oor die aanvang van die opgradering van die drie groot kruisings op die R31 Hoofweg tussen Barkly-Wes en Landbou-paaie na verkeerssirkels. Die opgradering sal ook ‘n nuwe toegangspad tussen die R31 / R357 en N8 / R31 kruisings insluit.
Die konstruksiewerk sal in fases, as volg geskied:
- Die voorgestelde R31 / R357 verkeerssirkel begin op 22 September 2017;
- Die voorgestelde N8 / R31 verkeerssirkel begin op 22 September 2017;
- Die voorgestelde N12 / R31 verkeerssirkel begin op 04 April 2018; en
- Die toegangspad op R31 sal vanaf middel Oktober 2017 begin tot aan die einde van die konstruksietydperk in Januarie 2018.
Die hoofdoel van hierdie projekte is om nie net die ervaring van die padgebruiker te verbeter nie, maar ook die algehele veiligheid. Studies het getoon dat die kruisings, in hul huidige vorm, gereelde verkeersinsidente ervaar wat veroorsaak word deur voertuie wat teen hoë spoed reis, met ernstige beserings, en in sommige gevalle sterftes, van bestuurders en passassiers.
“Die kontrak maak ook voorsiening vir die verhoogde veiligheid van voetgangers en fietsryers, met geplaveide sypaadjies en voetoorgange, asook die skepping van geplaveide eilande in die middel, met randstene. Die installering van beligting by elk van die drie verkeerssirkels en hulle aangrensende paaie hou saans groot veiligheidsvoordele in vir bestuurders, voetgangers en fietsryers,”sê Kobus van der Walt, SANRAL Wes-streek se bestuurder.
Die verkeervertraging weens konstruksie by elke kruising sal na verwagting tien tot vyftien minute duur, afhangende van die verkeersvolumes. Daar bestaan geen alternatiewe roetes binne die onmiddellike omgewing rondom die projek wat as ‘n ompad gebruik kan word om konstruksie te vermy nie.
