SPLM PRESS RELEASE – Service Delivery Protest Santa Area

Media statement on service delivery protest that took place in Santa Area.

The Sol Plaatje Local Municipality is committed to delivering services to community members and particularly residents of the entire locality, with regards to the protest that took place on the 30/01/2017 at above mentioned area a number of issues highlighted by residents are the following, lack of basic services as water, sanitation, electricity, housing and proper roads, we made a commitment to have a meeting and come to lasting solution that would help remedy the situation.

Follow up meeting
The meeting took place on the 30/01/2017 at the above mentioned area, 5pm, same day were a way forward on the matter was given by the office, a total number of 286 shacks in the area of Santa Centre needs to be serviced but only 140 will be actual beneficiaries of services in that locality, as double parking and the area is overcrowded, an alternative land is identified and this was communicated to the residents, we will start with necessary work in the said area and immediately after the process relocation will then take place so that services can be installed in the area.

Site visit.
A site visit took place this morning 31/01/2017 with officials and engineers to check on possible and immediate challenges that can be resolved in the area, a number of three communal taps were installed in the area, we further confirmed that a need for water in the area is already met as most of residents do have running water, we commit to assisting our communities through working together and in this regard we urge patience and allow relocation should take place so that installing of services could take place.

We applaud the councillor who was part of the process since yesterday and managed to assist and calm there situation in the area, we will be monitoring progress closely starting from today up until next week on the above mentioned commitments, there will be a follow up community meeting and will be communicated to residents through their respective councillor.
