THE NEW university in the Northern Cape will be known as the Sol Plaatjie University. This was announced yesterday by President Jacob Zuma at a press conference regarding the progress made so far in establishing the two new universities, held at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. The briefing was also attended by the Minister of Higher Education, Blade Mzimande. Announcing the name, Zuma said the target was to grow the university over a 10-year development preiod to accomodate 5000 full-time students at the main campus in Kimberley.
“The university will grow its institutional, academic, and infrastructure capacity in a planned and gradual manner.”
He confirmed that the Sol Plaatjie University would be established initially on the main campus, but added that it was envisaged that it could expand further as a multi-campus university in the future.
