Looming water crisis in Kimberley 2014/01/22

Statement released by the Sol Plaatje Municipality

Due to the extended heat wave that we have experienced in Kimberley over the past weeks, water use has soared and water levels at the Newton reservoirs have steadily dropped over the same period of time. Despite experiencing no operational problems at the Riverton Purification Plant and no major water leakages on our network, the water level has now dropped to just below 10 feet at Newton reservoirs. The situation is still well in hand, but to prevent a possible further drop in the levels, an appeal is urgently made to all our water users of Sol Plaatje to use water as very sparingly as possible, especially when watering gardens and filling empty pools.

We are monitoring the situation constantly and hope we will have good rain very soon to alleviate the situation. Should the situation not improve, we might have to resort to night shutdowns which we want to avoid by all means necessary. These might start as soon as from Friday night, 24 January 2014, until further notice to ensure a turnaround in the levels. Water supply will be shut down between 2300 and 0500 every day. As soon as the situation has improved sufficiently, the shut downs will be suspended.

We apologize for any inconvenience that might be caused by this short term intervention that is required should the situation not improve.

Regards
