Yesterday (08/11/2017) the electricity supply to large parts of Kimberley was interrupted. The power outages started at around 3am on Wednesday morning (08/11/2017) apparently due to a faulty transformer affecting various substations. The electricity supply to Newton Reservoir was also interrupted causing a water supply outage to areas fed from the reservoir.
When the Sol Plaatje Electrical Department restored electricity after repairs were completed, the supply to some areas including the Kimberley CBD, did not come back online due to a 11kVa cable which was damaged by contractors at The Newton Reservoir supplying The Newpark Substation in Waterworks Street. Electricity was diverted from other substations to affected areas.
The damaged cable still needs to be repaired after which power to some areas will have to be temporarily cut to enable a switch-over. The switch-over date will be announced when received from Sol Plaatje Municipality.
