In Johannesburg, an earthquake — originally thought to be just a tremor — was felt across most parts of South Africa early on Tuesday afternoon. People reported to have felt it in Mozambique and Botswana.
The US Geological Survey website reported it measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale and the quake happened 6km east of Orkney in the North West province.
South Africans immediately took to social media, such as Twitter and Facebook to express their alarm.
A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck parts of South Africa south of the commercial capital Johannesburg on Tuesday, the United States Geological Survey reported.
ER24 had received no reports of casualties, almost half an hour after it struck. So luckily no one got hurt.
The tremor was also felt in neighbouring countries of Botswana and Mozambique.
There are unconfirmed reports of a ceiling falling on students at a school in Klerksdop. We will verify this, once we have all the facts.
