Proposed Councillor Salaries

In other developments SALGA has proposed that Municipal Councillors should earn the same is Members of Parliament (MP’s) and Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPL’s).  This could raise councillors salaries to about R1.3 million per year.  According to the DFA local residents are outraged at this proposal, raising concerns such as current  poor service delivery and the absence of councillors in the community.

Lerato Park Service Delivery Protests

In the continuation of the service delivery protests at Lerato Park / Bobo se Plaas / Roodepan The Northern Cape Premier, Sylvia Lucas, yesterday scolded the community for their rudeness and for taking their unhappiness to the streets. She warned that the housing project would not go on if the community continued their protests.
Residents branded the meeting as a “waste of time” and shunned the MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) Alvin Botes, who also arrived with the MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Martha Bartlett.

Municipal Manager Salaries

Are the salaries of the Top Brass at Sol Plaatje Municipality justified?  According to Mr Andrew Louw of the DA the total remuneration package of R2.051 million paid to Sol Plaatje Municipal Manager, Mr Goolam Akharwaray,  is higher than any other municipal manager in the Northern Cape, including district municipalities. “This is more than magistrates, Members of Parliament, mayors, traditional kings, high court judges and deputy ministers earn. In fact, it is higher than the salary of the premier, which is reportedly R1.7 million. It is also significantly higher than any of the Members of the Executive Council (MECs), who earn around R1.2 million,” Louw stated.
