Due to water levels at Newton Reservoir still not at a satisfactory level, the Nightly Water Shutdowns are still being implemented until levels have reached full capacity.
Time of Nightly Water Shutdown: 20:00 – 04:00 / 8pm – 4am
PLEASE NOTE: As in the past, sometimes water was switched off earlier than specified or switched on later than the times mentioned. Time of water switch on does not necessarily mean water will be available at that specified time, the system will need to first be filled and as such some areas will receive water after the stipulated time depending on the area’s location.

TODAY IS CROISSANT DAY
The legend of how the croissant came to be is that in 1683, the Turkish Empire laid siege on Vienna, Austria. The Turks made several attempts to conquer the city by force, but were unsuccessful, so decided to try underground tunnels. The bakers of Vienna, who worked in the basement storerooms, heard the sound of digging and alerted the cities army.
For their vigilance, the bakers received high honors and thanks for their assistance in outwitting the Turks. In celebration, they baked their bread in the shape of a crescent moon—the symbol of the Ottoman Empire. After the Turks were defeated, it became custom to serve morning coffee with the crescent-shaped pastry!
The legend continues to say that over a hundred years later, Marie Antoinette introduced the pastry to the French who dubbed it a “croissant”. Celebrate Croissant Day in style by eating an abundance of this tasty treat!

30 January 1903, Mrs Joseph Chamberlain (Mary Crowninshield Endicott, daughter of the US Secretary of War) lays the foundation stone of the Women’s Hostel in Lennox Street.
30 January 1909, Twelve miners – six white and six black – awarded the Edward Medal for bravery in a Kimberley Mine disaster.
