UPDATE 08:00 25/11/2017 • WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION STATUS

Most areas served by Newton Reservoir now have fair to good water pressure.

Some areas in Kimberley are still experience very low to now water pressure including parts of Galeshewe, Restwelele, West End Near Fuller Road and Ipeleng.
If you still have no water contact the Municipal Call Centre on 087 310 5220 or SMS 44204. (For mere details see the fault reporting guide at https://www.kimberley.org.za/?p=2298) . Please post the feedback you recievee on https://www.facebook.com/groups/KimberleyInfrastructure/ to help otherS as well as not everyone has airtime to contact the call centre.

UPDATE 21:00 24/11/2017 • WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION
“Newton Reservoir supply being restored: We have started to pump. The pump that was troubling at least has been resolved. We will be starting the second pump according to sequence.
This is purely to supply the high lying areas. Galeshewe and Roodepan are still off. Once this is sorted we will supply those areas”
Sello Matsie

UPDATE 19:55 24/11/2017 • WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION • VIA Thoko Riet of Sol Plaatje Municipality. “We will start pumping to the town areas shortly. Levels have picked up a bit.”
NOTE: When the pumps are started again pressure will have to build up in the city’s pipe network (which must be mostly empty again) and it can take considerable time for pressure to build again and water to reach certain households.

UPDATE 19:30 24/11/2017 • WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION
There has been no official updates from Sol Plaatje since this afternoon.

We did receive UNOFFICIAL information that the outgoing water supply at Newton Reservoir may have been shut off. The poll at https://www.facebook.com/groups/KimberleyInfrastructure/permalink/1979191119004246/ also indicate that Sol Plaatje possible shut off water distribution from Newton Reserervoir to increase levels in the dams to a point where the pressure will be adequate to restore water to all ore more areas.

UPDATE 19:20 24/11/2017 • WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION
With no information currently coming from Sol Plaatje we are doing a quick poll about the state of the water restoration. Please click on the link and comment on the post with:

Your suburb name AND 1 if you have high water pressure, 2 if you have medium water pressure, 3 if you have very low water pressure, 4 if you have no water.

UPDATE 16:15 24/11/2017 • WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION
“Om mee te begin. Die damvlakke by Newton reservoir is baie laag.
Johan Smit

UPDATE 15:45 24/11/2017 • WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION
Water pressure is building very slowly in high lying and some remote areas as the amount of water being used is similar to the pumping capacity from Riverton.

“Sol Plaatje Municipality is still trying to build up water reserves so that all areas get water. Supply has been only 50% for high lying areas” Sello Matsie

UPDATE 08:34 24/11/2017 • WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION

“Electricians working on second pump at Newton Reservoir. Should be able to restart the pump.”

Regards
Sello Matsie

UPDATE 08:10 24/11/2017 • WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION

“Not all pumps are running currently at Newton but electricity department sorting out the other two pumps.” Sello Matsie

UPDATE 05:00 24/11/2017 • WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION

Newton Reservoir is struggling to start. They have been attempting since midnight to no success..levels have picked up. Unfortunately still no water for high lying areas though Galeshewe and Roodepan should be receiving by now. Will continue to try and start until it’s resolved.” Sello Matsie

UPDATE 22:30 23/11/2017 • WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION

There has been af few reports from certain low lying areas that they are starting to get water; although with very low pressure thus far.

UPDATE 19:30 23/11/2017 • WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION
Via Sello Matsie “#Riverton Pipeline Update. Supply being restored
Thank you for patience and understanding. The pipeline repairs is complete. We will be starting up and slowly flooding the entire system to avoid air bubbles. NB: PLEASE LET TAP RUN SMALL TO CLEAR HOUSE PIPES.
Once more thanks very much from entire team.” Sello Matsie

NOTE: After previous similar repairs it took hours to build pressure in the Riverton pipeline and the city water network which needs to happen before water can reach all households.

UPDATE 18:00 23/11/2017 • WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION
The latest updates from Sol Plaatje indicate that the leak has been sealed. Welding to close the opening which was cut to access the pipe is being finalised.
If there are no complications the water restoration process could be starting soon.
NOTE: After previous similar repairs it took hours to build pressure in the Riverton pipeline and the city water network which needs to happen before water can reach all households.

UPDATE 14:20 23/11/2017 • WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION

Info and Photos via Johan Smit:

UPDATE 12:45 23/11/2017 • WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION
————————————————————————————-

Sello Matsie: #Riverton Pipeline Update 12:45 – WATER QUALITY

The 965mm and 600mm pipes are virtually empty at this stage and Newton Reservoir has been switch off to protect the pressure levels.

Due to the empty pipes, sediments are now emerging from taps especially in Galeshewe. WE URGE RESIDENTS RATHER NOT TO USE WATER or rather to minimise usage until the situation has normalised later today.

UPDATE 11:30 23/11/2017 • WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION
————————————————————————————-
Sello Matsie: #Riverton Pipeline Update 11:00

Pipe Repairs still underway. Welding is what will be done. Please use water for essential purposes only for now. Next update at 13.00

HOW TO AVOID PROBLEMS WHEN WATER IS RESTORED AFTER AN OUTAGE

NOTES ON WATER RESTORATION:
Once repairs to the Riverton Pipeline has been completed and Riverton start pumping it can take up to a couple of hours for the water supply to return to normal. It takes almost 1000 lites of water to fill up 1m of a 965mm pipeline and the pipeline from Riverton to Kimberley is over 20km longs. There are also various 600mm pipes that needs to filled. Depending on the water levels at Newton Reservoir the pipe network in the city may also be empty. If this is the case this network also needs to be filled and pressured to restore water to households.

In the case that leaks are detected at the repaired area when the Riverton pipeline is pressurised it may be necessary to shut down Roverton again and wait for the pipeline to empty before repairs can be continues. Although this is highly unlikely it has happened in the past.

HOPE FOR THE BEST BUT PLAN FOR THE WORST

UPDATE 05:40 – 23/11/2017 • WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION

NOTE: The estimate time frames quoted below seem to be “best case scenario” and thus may be overly optimistic. Also note that the information provided state that it will likely take up to midday just complete the welding, and only then can the restoration process start.

” This will likely be up to midday. Just the welding. This pipe is almost 20 km and diameter 965. Hold millions of cubic metres. But once cut on top. Will go inside to repair than shut top cover” – Sello Matsie

[05:24, 23/11/2017] Sello Matsie: #Riverton Pipeline Update 04:50

There has been very little Progress overnight as the 965mm pipe line has not completely dried out delaying repair efforts. This despite shutting down Riverton Purification plant completely. The pipe will be welded shortly which will take some few hours. For now we will utilise Jojo tanks in several areas of Roodepan and Galeshewe but will also open dams at Newton Reservoir for further supply to highlying areas. The inconvenience is highly regrettable.

WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION UPDATE 21:27 – 22/11/2017 – VIA SELLO MATSIE

[21:26, 11/22/2017] Sello Matsie: Riverton Update

The pipe has been reached. There are two leaks that needs to be closed. The pipe is almost fully drained and access to the pipe has improved. We hope to conclude before daybreak.

Supply is currently by two pumps from Newton Reservoir whose levels are dropping fast though we are maintaining a balance utilising other reservoir dams. Non availability for Royldene is due to reduced pump capacity but working on resuming supply

Regards
Sello Matsie

WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION UPDATE 21:00 – 22/11/2017

Large areas of Kimberley still have very low or no water pressure at the moment.
Including areas which was stated below not be affected.
There is still no feedback from Sol Plaatje Municipality on progress or possible restoration time.

Water Supply Interruption; Leakage on the 965mm Riverton Pipeline

Notice is hereby given of a major leakage on our 965mm pipeline between Riverton and the city of Kimberley. We have immediately stopped supply from the Riverton Purification Plant on this line, while we continue to supply the city through the 600mm pipeline.

Areas of Roodepan and Galeshewe which receive direct supply, will experience a drop in water pressure immediately. The upper lying areas (CBD, El Toro Park, New Park, Herlear, Carrington Road, Cassandra, Beaconsfield etc) will not be affected negatively as the current levels at Newton Reservoir are adequate to continue supply. We request the community to commence using water sparingly and will provide regular updates on the situation. We regret the inconvenience.
