According to eyewitness reports a taxi made an illegal U-turn in Oliver Road, in front of a bakkie turning into Oliver Road out of Hercules street. An accident was narrowly avoided. A heated verbal exchange ensued between the driver of the taxi, who stopped in the middle of the road, and the driver of bakkie.
At this stage the Taxi driver exited his vehicle with a baton in hand and was met by the bakkie driver who used pepper spray, some of which entered the taxi. The bakkie driver returned to his vehicle and tried to make his way around the taxi, when the taxi driver threw a brick at the bakkie. The bakkie driver stopped next to the road in the veld and was subsequently stormed by the taxi driver with a baton in one hand and a brick in the other. The bakkie driver exited his vehicle holding a hunting rifle.
The taxi driver kept his distance and an even more heated verbal exchange ensued while the taxi driver continued to throw stones at the bakkie driver.
More taxis stopped at the scene and started to gang up on the bakkie driver and also thew stones at him. It was then that multiple police vehicles arrived on the scene and took control of the situation. The bakkie driver placed his rifle back in his bakkie, but it was removed by SAPS shortly thereafter.
The police and all parties thereafter proceeded to the police station.
Witnesses report that at no time did the bakkie driver point his rifle at any person and commended the swift action of the police services.
