SERVICE DELIVERY PROTEST GETS VIOLENT

Service delivery protests have erupted in Colville and the situation is currently extremely volatile.

All roads leading into the area have been closed by angry residents, who have gathered in groups in different parts of the suburb.
Roads where protesters have gathered and that are currently closed include the corner of Recreation Road and St Peter’s Road, Omega Street, St Paul’s Road and Stockroos Street.

Reports are emerging from the area that the police have opened fire on community members, including children, shooting at them with rubber bullets.

It is believed that around eight people have been shot, including a seven month pregnant woman who was fleeing from the rubber bullets.
The protesters have responded by pelting stones and rocks at the police, and at least one policeman has been hit with a stone.
As the police opened fire, protesters scattered in different directions, some running into neighbouring streets and nearby houses to escape.
