Roundabouts For Killer Crossings

Rural roundabouts have been proposes as part of a R98.5 million upgrade to three intersections on the outskirts of Kimberley in an attempt to manage heavy traffic. These intersections are on the Cape Town Road (N12), the Douglas Road (R357) and the Griekwastad Road (N8).  The report states further that the project cost is estimated to be R98.5 million which will be covered mainly by Sanral (R63 million) and Northern Cape Roads and Public Works (R34.5 million). The project is likely to commence early in 2017.
Municipal Spokesman, Sello Matsie, said that the increase in traffic volume, as well as safety concerns at these intersections, where numerous fatal accidents take place on an almost monthly basis, had been under the spotlight, and traffic in the CBD is also a concern. “The increase in traffic in the CBD is a concern and a more permanent solution is required and this has been the subject of discussions at various council sub-committees,” said Matsie.  He pointed out that the decision to reopen Bultfontein Road also formed part of finding a solution to traffic congestions in the CBD.
