Reports that the Zama Zamas (Illegal Miners) are throwing stones again at passing motorists on Boshof Road.

Yesterday violence broke out between Zama Zama’s and security personnel of KEM-JV (Kimberley Ekapa Mining Joint Venture).
According to KEM-JV their employees and contracted security personnel came under attack yesterday morning after entering the area to load dumps and to recover material for road construction. Zama Zama’s reportedly threw stones and set the veld on fire.
Two Kem-JV employees were taken to hospital for injuries. Both sustained head injuries after one was hit with a steel pipe while the other was hit by a rock.
The Contracted Security opened fire with rubber bullets on the Zama Zama’s.
Police were called in to intervene.
Lucky Seekoei, the chairperson of the Kimberley Artisanal Mine Workers was taking into police custody.
The R64 between Boshof and Kimberley was closed at times for the safety of motorists.
Last night fires were still burning in the area but members of various SAPS units are monitoring the situation.

UPDATE 12/09/2017 15:45 via WhatsApp “So far one lane has been opened, but its still very touch and go.”
There are riots on the Boshof Road (R64) just outside Kimberley. Stones were thrown at cars and reportedly rubber bullets were used. SAPS and Security are at the scene.
The public are advised to avoid the area.
