TEMPORARY WATER INTERRUPTION 20 DECEMBER 2020 – All Areas

Sol Plaatje Municipality have indicated that there is a major leak on the 965mm water pipe behind Soul City. As a result thereof, emergency repairs will be conducted on Sunday, 20 December 2020 from 6am to 6pm to ensure that water loss is minimised and to maintain the water level at Newton Reservoir. All areas will be without water for the duration of the repairs.

Current dam levels are increasing, so no Nightly Shutdown is envisaged. Repairs are also being done on major pipe bursts. If anything changes, we will keep all updated.

TODAY IS NATIONAL HARD CANDY DAY
A favorite of young and old alike, National Hard Candy Day on December 19th, recognizes the sweet tooth in all of us.
Most hard candies are 100% sugar with flavoring and colors added. To achieve a hard candy, confectioners boil a sugar syrup to 320 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the temperature is reached, the hot, pliable sugar is poured into molds or rolled and folded into shapes and left to cool. Once cool, solid sugar becomes hardened and brittle.
The first hard candies, such as lemon drops and peppermints, were likely prescribed as a remedy for stomach ailments.
Hard candy became popular in the seventeenth century as sugar prices fell. Previously, hard candy was something that only the well-to-do could afford. By the mid-1800s, over 400 companies were manufacturing this popular treat.

As of today, 18 December 2020, a cumulative total of 901 538 COVID-19 cases have been reported with 8 725 new cases identified since the last report.
A cumulative total of 6 051 986 tests have been completed with 40 751 new tests conducted since the last report.
Regrettably, 274 more COVID-19 related deaths have been reported: Eastern Cape 92 , Free State 6, Gauteng 15, Kwa-Zulu Natal 56, Mpumalanga 4 and Western Cape 101.
This brings the total deaths to 24 285 deaths.
We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the health workers that treated the deceased.
Our recoveries now stand at 783 818.
This evening we convened a public briefing to announce that a variant of the SARS-COV-2 Virus-currently termed 501.V2 Variant, has been identified by our genomics scientists here in South Africa.
