Workers from a company contracted by telecommunication companies to lay fibre optic cables in Kimberley, damaged electrical cables next to the Ruth Street Substation. This resulted in an interruption of electricity supply in Hillcrest, Hadison Park, Carters Glen and portions of other neighbourhoods.
After a ring fed from the Silson Road Substation was introduced another cable fault occurred at around 9pm last night (27/01/2014) which affected Pickering, Vermaas and Carters Road as well as the George Barrel substation. This lead to large parts of the city being without electricity. Areas affected included Riviera, Rhodesdene and Verwoerd Park in addition to those affected earlier in the day.
Repairs are ongoing at the moment in Cassa Mia Street to repair the damaged 11 KV cable, but all electricity supplies has been restored.
The Sol Plaatje Municipality stated that they are highly concerned about the damage to the cities electrical cables by the said company, which occurs at an alarming frequency.
The company was supplied with design sketches indicating the location of all electrical and water infrastructure.
A notice is being sent out by the municipal manager to all relevant role players stating that the current situation is totally unacceptable and may lead to offenders being denied access to cities infrastructure.
The Municipality also apologised for the inconvenience caused.
