UPDATE: 11 December 2024 – 16:50
WATER RESTRICTIONS – SUPPLY RECOVERY PROGRAMME
The Sol Plaatje Municipality hereby announces water restrictions starting today, Wednesday 11 December 2024 at 21H00.
These restrictions are aimed at improving levels at the Newton Reservoirs, which have been depleted due to a high demand exacerbated by the ongoing heatwave.
Water Restrictions
In terms of Section 4 of the Water Services Act 108 of 1997 and Clause 31 of the Water and Sanitation Services By-Law, the following will be prohibited:
a) Watering of gardens, lawns, grassed areas, flowerbeds, sports fields, bowling greens, and similar areas;
b) Topping up of filling fountains, ornamental ponds;
c) Filling of swimming and paddling pools; and
d) Washing of paved areas, walls, roofs, buildings, and other similar structures.
Water levels at Newton Reservoirs on 11 December 2024 were as follows:
TANK NUMBER | CAPACITY | DESIRED LEVEL | CURRENT AVG LEVEL | CAPACITY |
1 | 102 Megalitre | 17 Feet | 12,7 Feet | 74% full |
2 | 91 Megalitre | 17 Feet | 9,3 Feet | 54% full |
3 | 45 Megalitre | 16 Feet | 10,8 Feet | 63% full |
4 | 23 Megalitre | 16 Feet | 12,4 Feet | 75% full |
The Municipality has been producing water at an average of 100 megalitre per day. However, due to the current heat wave and subsequent demand, the water produced is lower than the 115 megalitres per day required.
The Riverton Water Treatment Plant has a treating capacity of 165 Megalitres per day, but the plant is operating at a 60% capacity. The municipality is currently, refurbishing the treatment plants for optimum production.

Daytime: 12:00 to 17:00
The continuation of the Nightly Water Supply Interruption – Nightly: 21:00 to 04:00
Residents will be kept informed on the reservoir levels throughout the holiday season.

UPDATE: 2 December 2024 – 15:00
DAYTIME AND NIGHTLY WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTIONS
Status: Residents are informed that the water supply interruptions will continue as communicated:
Daytime: 13:00 to 17:00
Nightly : 21:00 to 04:00
Cause: Our reservoir levels dropped significantly amid the unfortunate and unforeseen three bursts on the 900mm diameter pipe last week.

Newton Reservoir Levels
*A decision is set to be taken this Wednesday 04 December 2024, on whether to withdraw the Daytime Water Supply Interruption or continue replenishing for restoration of normal supply.
Reservoirs Levels
* Reservoir 102 megaliter = isolated
* Reservoir 91 megaliter = 80 %
* Reservoir 45 megaliter = 90 %
* Reservoir 23 megaliter = 92 %
Residents will be kept updated on the reservoir levels and related developments.
