Exciting new EdTech project launching in Kimberley – 29/02/2016

Today an exciting new EdTech project was launched in Kimberley. 8 Primary schools have been selected for the Technology Assisted Learning in Maths project. This innovative project is a result of a collaboration between the Northern Cape Department of Education, education NGO Green Shoots and UK funders Comic Relief.

Green Shoots, is the first of its kind in the country to utilise big data to provide layers of analysis to different education stakeholders. Specialising in ‘technology assisted learning’ and innovation within the ICT education environment, Green Shoots developed an online maths curriculum for grades three to nine that has the capacity to track individual learner progress throughout a year.

Green Shoots director, Jo Besford, comments: “We are extremely delighted to be piloting this project in the Kimberley schools. We are proud to be partnering with the Northern Cape Education Department for this three year Maths focused project”

The project also offers a comprehensive teacher training and professional development element and features a support programme for school management and Education Department officials to encourage real-time, data-informed decisions when planning strategies and interventions for maths teaching and learning.

Green Shoots recently won a global EdTech award for this same Project. The World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) announced that this project won a place in its Global Accelerator programme for 2015/ 2016. Green Shoots was the only African-based winner for 2015-2016.

“We see ourselves as a pathfinder organisation with a mission to innovate within the ICT education sector and we firmly believe that education is the biggest enabler of any society to move forward”, Besford concluded.
