Mining halted on local heritage site

An urgent interim interdict has been granted in the Northern Cape High Court to halt mining operations at Canteen Kopje near Barkly West. The area is reported to be one of South Africa’s oldest and richest archaeological sites containing evidence of ancient artefacts and stone age tools. The respondents must give reasons by April 8 as to why the interim interdict should not be made permanent.
