19 JAN 2020 UPDATE SLOW INTERNET – SOUTH AFRICA
The cable repair ship due to effect repairs on the WACS cable break is trapped in Cape Town Harbour by gale-force winds.
Current weather forecasts suggest the wind may only subside on Monday.
18 JAN 2020 SLOW INTERNET – SOUTH AFRICA
In addition to the below outages, another break on the WACS link has been reported, this time near the United Kingdom.
Local internet service providers are diverting traffic through another undersea cable, SEACOM/EASSy, which runs alongside the eastern coast of Africa. This is ensuring that South Africans can still access the internet, but it is also putting pressure on the SEACOM cable, causing slower internet access.
It is unclear when the affected cables will be fully operational again.
16 JAN 2020 SLOW INTERNET – SOUTH AFRICA
Both the WACS and SAT3 cables providing international connectivity between South Africa and international locations were knocked out on Thursday. These breaks are having a major impact on internet connectivity speed to sites outside of South Africa.
The WACS cable lands in SA at Yzerfontein in the Western Cape and the SAT3/WASC system enters the country at Melkbosstrand in the Western Cape.
The SAT3/WASC break is in the Libreville, Gabon, vicinity and that the WACS break is in the vicinity of Luanda, Angola and The DRC.
Repair ships will be dispatched to attend to the breaks.
