UPDATE: 22 March 2024 – 16:31
The Sol Plaatje Municipality calls on all residents to store enough water for critical use with immediate effect. We are experiencing excessive water losses from a leaking gasket at Mid-station near Roodepan which might plunge us into an emergency shutdown and disrupt the Planned Water Supply Interruption set for Thursday 04 April to Monday 08 April 2024.
The gasket on the 900mm diameter butterfly valve has been leaking since mid-December 2023. The leak has worsened owing to the gasket having been eroded by the high pressure of water gushing out through it.
Residents efforts in immediately storing water will be two-fold; provide reserve supply in .se of an emergency and alleviate a high water demand during the duration of the planned interruption.
Call For Residents To Use Water Sparingly
Residents are encouraged to conserve water and should at all costs avoid filling swimming pools, washing vehicles with hosepipes and irrigate gardens with sprinkler systems and hosepipes.
Our Plan
We remain confident that our current Emergency Phase intervention plan to address the ageing infrastructure and maintenance backlogs on our bulk water supply infrastructure through the National Treasury’s Budget Facility for Infrastructure (BFI) grant, will result in the end of the Nightly Water Supply Interruptions.
MEC Roads and Public Works inspection of Major Leak Sites
The Sol Plaatje Municipality is also encouraged by the assessment visits to the sites of the various major leaks by the MEC for Roads and Public Works Fufe Makatong and her departmental team of engineers that occurred this morning.
Our internal and external teams constituted by consulting engineers and contractors provided insights into the scope of work to be undertaken for each site and other related Information.
Update To The Public And Media
With our focus still set on the Planned Water Supply Interruption, albeit the current excessive water losses at Mid-station and the threat of a possible emergency interruption, a Public Notice update will be issued on Tuesday, 26 March 2024 and with a Media Briefing also being held on the same day.//END
