THE NATIONAL CONSUMER COMMISSION TO HOST VACATION OWNERSHIP “TIMESHARE” PUBLIC HEARINGS IN KIMBERLEY AND BLOEMFONTEIN AS IT PREPARES TO WRAP UP PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT PHASE OF INDUSTRY INQUIRY
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) will be hosting public hearings in Kimberley and Bloemfontein next week to hear oral testimonies from aggrieved consumers of holiday club products and services. It has launched a national inquiry into the vacation ownership “timeshare” industry, to address what has become long standing consumer issues with the industry.
Northern Cape and Free State province resident consumers have incessantly complained about the conduct of holiday clubs. Allegation made by consumers include refusal by holiday clubs to cancel timeshare contracts, over-selling of limited accommodation which leads to unavailability of accommodation when consumers attempt to make bookings, and charging of exorbitant levies for upkeep and maintenance of facilities that are not owned by consumers.
As such the NCC is calling on all affected consumers who are resident in the respective provinces to attend and make submissions during public hearings. It has appointed a panel of consumer, property and contract law experts, who will preside over the hearing, collect evidence, conduct research and produce a report with sound recommendations that will take into account all consumers complaints.
Public hearings for the North Cape and Free State provinces will thus take place as follows:
