Veld Fire near Langberg on the N12

Late yesterday afternoon there was a veld fire near Langberg Guest Farm and Modderrivier on the N12.  The Sol Plaatje fire department could not immediately respond as they were already attending to at least 2 shack fires. Later last evening there was three small veld fires near Record Stoned Crushers which was detected early and extinguished quickly.

Earlier on Tuesday the house of Mohammed Sali Davajee, the caretaker at the Muslim cemetery, burned down.  According to Mr Davajee he left a mosquito coil lit next due his bed. “I was outside for a while and came back in to find that the coil had fallen onto the bed and that the mattress was on fire. I suspect that one of the cats must have bumped it over. “I pulled the mattress out of the room and carried it outside but the curtain also caught alight. When I came back inside the fire had spread and most of the house was already in flames. Thick smoke also made it impossible to retrieve any valuables. However, I went back in to collect my Qur’ans, which I consider my most valuable possession and left the rest in Allah’s hands”
