Kimberley Water Outage UPDATE – February 2021

UPDATE: 23 FEB 2021 – 08:00
In a message sent to the Acting Director, Mr Sithole, it was stated this morning (Tue, 23 Feb 2021) that the 45ML and 23ML reservoirs were at 13ft. Pumps were started at 04:00 with the level at 15ft.

Residents should however still use water sparingly otherwise the water situation will not return to normal and also to prevent possible earlier shutoff at Newton Reservoir if the need arises.

Yesterday, Mon 22 Feb 2021, the water outflow exceeded the water inflow which necessitated Newton Reservoir being switched off earlier for those areas that were scheduled to go off at 20:00.

MSG to Mr Sithole with regards to the Reservoir Levels.

UPDATE: 22 FEB 2021 – 10:04
As mentioned on a Ward Councillor’s WhatsApp Group, it appears as though the levels at Newton Reservoir are low which is adversely affecting the water supply where residents are experiencing little to no water pressure.

UPDATE: 21 FEB 2021 – 15:15
Improvement on water situation in Kimberley
In a media release by Executive Mayor Patrick Mabilo, it was mentioned that the water supply in the city has improved tremendously. Riverton had improved capacity to 90% and the levels at Newton Reservoir has also improved.

Based on these developments, the municipality will amend the water interruption times as follows:

Water in low lying areas from as of today, Sunday 21 Feb 2021, will be interrupted at 18h00 till 05h00 whilst high lying areas will be interrupted at 20h00 to 05h00.

The high lying areas are as follows – 20h00 to 05h00:
Hadison park, Hillcrest, Royldene, Monument Heights, Belgravia, Herlear, Klisserville, Southridge, Beaconsfield, Greenpoint, Rhodesdene

The low lying areas – 18h00 till 05h00:
West End, Galeshewe, Riviera, Roodepan, Homestead, Homevale, Homelite, Moghul park

UPDATE: 19 FEB 2021 – 12:26
In a media release by Mayor Patrick Mabilo, it was mentioned that the water supply from Riverton to Newton Reservoir has improved, however full capacity is not reached as yet. To mitigate the impact water is being interrupted at around 14:00 and opened again at around 05:00. This started on Sunday (14 February 2021) and shall continue until the situation returns to normal. He further states that they are optimistic that by this time next week (Friday, 26 Feb 2021), the situation will be very close to normal, if not normalized at all.

In conclusion: Water will still be switched off daily at around 14:00 and back on again at around 05:00 the following morning until the situation normalizes.

UPDATE: 19 FEB 2021 – 09:25
As mentioned on a Ward Councillor’s WhatsApp Group, Sol Plaatje have switched off water at Newton Reservoir to attend to 2x huge pipe bursts, one in Albertynshof and one in Carrington Road, Klisserville.

At this stage we are unsure if the water will be turned back on after said repairs have been completed or if this impacts the current daily water shutdowns.

UPDATE: 19 FEB 2021 – 07:49
In a statement released by the Acting Director Mr Sithole, it was mentioned that since repairs to the 965mm pipe the levels at Newton Reservoir this morning at 06:00 were as follows:
45 & 23ML – 15.3ft
91ML – 11.5ft

Once again it appears as though there is already a water shutdown as some residents are experiencing little to no water pressure from about 08:00 this morning, Fri 19 Feb 2021.
Whether the above info influences the current daily water shutdown, remains to be seen.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE BY THE ACTING DIRECTOR, MR SITHOLE ON WHATSAPP

Good Morning Everyone please take note that since the repaired of 965mm levels this morning at Newton reservoirs were 45 & 23 at 15.3. 91 at 11.5. 06:00. Slowly we are winning. To those who are watching from pavilion with too much negative we are slowly getting out of the woods. Regards Mr Sithole

UPDATE: 18 FEB 2021 – 12:30
As mentioned on a Ward Councillor’s WhatsApp Group, Sol Plaatje will be switching water off once again at 14:00 today, Thu 18 Feb 2021, and will be switched back on tomorrow morning, Fri 19 Feb 2021, presumably at 05:00 again, this despite many residents reporting little to no water already from about 11:15.

UPDATE: 18 FEB 2021 – 11:40
Many areas in Kimberley are once again experiencing little to no water pressure. As before, there is again zero communication from Sol Plaatje Municipality with regards to this ongoing issue..

At this stage we have no info as to when the water will return or whether this will run concurrently with the current water shutdown that residents have been dealing with every day from 14:00. If that is the case, there is a possibility that water will only be back on tomorrow morning, Fri 19 Feb 2021, as experienced yesterday, Wed 17 Feb 2021.

UPDATE: 17 FEB 2021 – 10:30
Many areas in Kimberley are currently experiencing little to no water pressure. We are still waiting for any form of feedback with regards to this, as feedback from Sol Plaatje is once again non-existent at this stage.

Some of the Areas Affected: Hillcrest, Carters Glen, CBD, De Beers, New Park, Albertynshof and possibly other areas too.

We will update as soon as we receive info.

PLEASE NOTE: At this stage the current water outage does not influence the water shutdown at 14:00 this afternoon, ie. Sol Plaatje will still be shutting water off at 14:00 as previously mentioned.

UPDATE: 17 FEB 2021 – 08:23
Sol Plaatje have stated on their social media that water was restored this morning (Wed, 17 Feb 2021) at 04:00 instead of the usual 05:00. They further mentioned that the water will once again be shutoff at 14:00 (2pm) today, Wed, 17 Feb 2021, as they continue to boost capacity of the water supply.

UPDATE: 16 FEB 2021 – 13:40
As mentioned on a Ward Councillor’s WhatsApp Group, Sol Plaatje will be switching water off once again at 14:00 today, Tue 16 Feb 2021, and will be switched back on tomorrow morning, Wed 17 Feb 2021, presumably at 05:00 again.

UPDATE: 16 FEB 2021 – 10:00
According to Sol Plaatje Call Centre, they are also in the dark as what the issue is with the water as the people out in the field are not answering their phones or giving any updates. We are currently waiting on an update from our Ward Councillors where a few have gone out to see what is happening at Riverton. We will keep all updated as best we can.

UPDATE: 15 FEB 2021 – 15:50
As mentioned on some of the Ward Councillor WhatsApp Groups, it appears as though Sol Plaatje have indeed switched water off and just used the exact wording in the last update. According to this update, supply of water will be back tomorrow morning, Tue, 16 Feb 2021 at 05:00 and depending how the levels look during the day, if there is a need to interrupt supply at 14:00 or whenever, it will be communicated to residents in advance.

UPDATE: 15 FEB 2021 – 15:40
It appears as though water has been switched off at Newton Reservoir as residents living near the Reservoir have reported having no water suddenly. This could also be an isolated incident (burst pipe, etc) or it is indeed Sol Plaatje that have decided to switch off the water to build the levels at Newton Reservoir as previously mentioned. Unfortunately no official update has been sent from Sol Plaatje to confirm or deny the above.

Please note the above update is taken from resident’s word of mouth about water and not that of Sol Plaatje as updates from Sol Plaatje are not forthcoming at this stage.

UPDATE: 13 FEB 2021 – 17:39
The dam levels at Riverton rose to an acceptable level earlier today so that purified water could be pumped to the Newton Reservoir. The supply to most areas that had water this morning was stopped around 12h00 and the valves opened for supply to other areas that were without water.

All valves were closed at 17h00 and the pumps will only be switched on again at 07h00 (Sun, 14 Feb 2021) to all areas. Please note the pipeline must first be filled which can take anything from 1 to 3 hours for the supply to be restored.

Original message in Afrikaans received via WhatsApp:

UPDATE: 12 FEB 2021 – 20:34
In a statement released by the Acting Director Mr Sithole, it was mentioned that the problem is at Riverton with muddy water due to the recent floods and opening of sluice gates on dams upstream. This has resulted in only two pumps being used to supply water to Newton Reservoirs as the filtration process is longer. Tonight (Fri, 12 Feb 2021) the reservoirs will be shut off whilst only pumping to the 23ML reservoir to enable a satisfactory level in order to restore the water supply in the morning.

It is still not guaranteed that the reservoir would’ve reached a sufficient level needed to open the water supply lines in the morning, but as soon as the level is high enough, the water supply will be opened for approximately 3 hours and switched off again to allow the levels to rise again.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE BY THE ACTING DIRECTOR, MR SITHOLE ON WHATSAPP

At the moment the problem at Riverton is muddy water due to floods and opening of sluice gates on dams upstream, as a result thereof we are only using two pumps to supply water to Newton reservoirs as the filtration process in longer. The 45 and 23 are both empty while 91 and 102 is at 8 ft level. This reason these reservoirs to be empty is because during past days we were not interrupting supply between 22:00 to 04:00.

So tonight we will shut off the reservoirs while only pumping to the 23ML reservoir to enable enough meters head gained at Newton to allow supply to be Restored in the morning.

But it is not guaranteed that in morning we will open the reservoirs due to required level that may be needed to open the water supplies lines.

In morning as soon as level are high enough will open supply approximately for three hours and switch off and allow the levels to rise again. Regards Mr Sithole

UPDATE: 12 FEB 2021 – 18:20
A local resident enquired about the water issue and Call Centre stated now that the Newton Reservoir has been switched off due to the levels being too low. Unfortunately there is no official Sol Plaatje statement to confirm this, but many areas are experiencing little to no water pressure.

UPDATE: 12 FEB 2021 – 16:10
According to Sol Plaatje Call Centre the pumps are currently pumping at a lower than normal capacity which is affecting some areas still with little to no water pressure. SP are aware of the issue and trying to sort out the issue.

UPDATE: 12 FEB 2021 – 09:10
According to Sol Plaatje Call Centre there is a mainline pipe burst in Dutoitspan Road affecting the water supply. Many areas will have little to no water pressure.

Areas Affected: Many areas.
Time of Restoration: Unknown
