Despite several warnings from the Sol Plaatje Municipality, city residents continue to fall victim to scamsters, who have already conned them out of thousands of rands for supposed electricity saving devices. In the last incidents, which occurred on Thursday and Friday last week, two elderly Hadison Park residents were allegedly sold a solar light and a small water pump as apparent “electricity saving” devices. Municipal spokesman, Sello Matsie, said that they believed that someone with access to residents’ municipal accounts was involved. “Both residents were contacted by a woman , claiming to be from the Sol Plaatje Municipality, promoting a gadget which she stated would cut their municipal bill from around R2500 a month to R700” said Matsie.
