FROM SELLO MATSIE OF SOL PLAATJE MUNICIPALITY
Water Supply Update: Newton Reservoir
Issued Wednesday 29 November 2017 15:00

Our water supply capacity is increasing steadily as we continue with efforts to pick up levels at Newton Reservoir.Today’s switch off at Newton Reservoir is scheduled to start 21:00 till 4:00 am.

We have also started with a massive campaign to repair all other leaks on main pipelines of the network from Riverton and throughout the city. This work will include conduct maintenance service on all pumps, filters and safety checks to ensure better management of the water resources.

Remember that Roodepan and Galeshewe will continue to receive supply and may only experience low pressure.”

NEWTON RESERVOIR SHUTDOWN TUESDAY 28/11/2017 @ 18:00

Update form Sello Matsie: Water Supply Update: Newton Reservoir – [12:16, 11/28/2017]

Tuesday 28 November 2017 12:00

We are currently running at full water supply capacity however we are not building enough surplus to raise the levels at the Newton Reserve to satisfactory levels. We kindly wish to request your out most cooperation to implement the following temporary measures;

That for today, Tuesday ONLY we would like to close a bit earlier at 18:00 to till 4:00am.

That there will still be supply in lower lying areas that are not depended on the pressure tower at Newton; simply that areas of Roodepan and Galeshewe will still have supply due to availability of water still in the system.

We hope to increase Newton Reservoir capacity by plus minus 3 million litres by tomorrow morning.

Regards
Sello Matsie

WATER UPDATE 28/11/2017 09:10

There is currently a message doing the rounds on Social Media stating a total shutdown of water all over Kimberley from 28 November to 4 December. This message was confirmed by the Sol Plaatje Municipality Communications Department to be FALSE.

General Notice 09:15 28/11/2017: Sharing of information – From the Sol Plaatje Municipal Manager

It has come to my attention that various persons purport to speak on the ongoing water problems. Please note that only Mr Sello Matsie is sufficiently apprised of the facts and authorized to speak on the subject on behalf of the municipality. Residents are advised that our efforts to restore water levels are bearing fruit and should be resolved soon; the strategy is to maintain supply during the day and interrupt for a short while at night to rebuild reserves.”

[21:55, 11/27/2017] Riverton Pump Update From Sello Matsie

“Please be advised that the pump at Riverton Purification plant has been restored and we running at full capacity. This will assist to alleviate the current water supply situation.”

NEWTON RESERVOIR UPDATE  27/11/2017 21:00

Although the official times for watershedding is 10pm to 4am the nightly shutdown can start earlier. Last night at 9pm there were already reports of almost no water pressures.

NEWTON RESERVOIR UPDATE  27/11/2017 19:00
NOTE: According to Sol Plaatje Municipality the nightly water-shedding is from +-10pm to +-4am. The actual time water goes off and is restored to a specific location are influenced by the distance from the reservoir and the elevation of the location. So take those times as approximate and variable.

From Sol Plaatje Municipality: Newton Reservoir -Building of Reserves

We are currently building up water reserves at Newton Reservoir which necessitate that we close off valves so that the bulk of water supply from the Riverton Purification plant goes straight into Newton Reservoir. While this is being done, consideration is made not unnecessarily disrupt the daily activities of households. It must be emphasised that Galeshewe and other areas get their supply directly from the main pipes. Even when valves are closed, there is still 35 million litres in the system which won’t evaporate into the air, it must be used up before taps run dry.
As for the closure, kindly be informed that will take place only from around 10:00pm and restarted at 4.00am. The impact is highly limited and from experience, there are large areas which continue to have supply.
Therefore the sms doing rounds is incorrect and is causing panic which will have negative consequences as people will now deplete the water reserves” Sello Matsie

The ultimate objective is to prevent a situation of total water levels depletion at Newton. The levels are at 12ft. To build up water reserves at Newton Reservoir we will reduce supply only at night for a few days during the week. Water Pressure will remain low in some areas until situation has been stabilised.” Sello Matsie
