New Building Plans – A Friendly Warning

I have recently noticed a worrying trend in Kimberley. People advertise their services for building designs and building plans ; without having the proper qualifications and/or registrations in place. Herewith a friendly warning to the public:

When erecting a new building, improving or adding to an existing building, building plans approved by the Municipality are required. For the Municipality to consider a building application, building plans will, in most circumstances, need to be prepared by an architectural professional.

The architectural professional that is appointed to prepare the building plans will however need to be registered in terms of section 18(2) of the Architectural Professions Act, No. 44 of 2000, with the SA Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP). If they are not registered with SACAP and practicing as architectural professionals, they are committing a criminal offence in terms of the act.

Only people registered with SACAP in the following categories, may practice architecture and thereby issue drawings for municipal approval:
-Professional Architect;
-Professional Senior Architectural Technologist;
-Professional Architectural Technologist; or
-Professional Architectural Draughtsperson.
